At first glance, the best word to describe Aoba would probably be youthful. One of the first things we learn about him is that he has the looks of an elementary schooler, and it would seem he's got a personality to match.
Whether it's the fact that he never stops smiling ever, or the air of innocence he gives off, Aoba pretty much embodies the whole Cheerful Child trope. He makes it a point to be polite to his classmates, and is fairly humble with his upperclassmen. His innocent nature also seems to give him an appreciation for honesty, as he's fairly open about his feelings, to the point he flat-out states if something troubles him. Unfortunately. this also means he's prone to let his mouth run a little without thinking, such as when he asks if Mikado and Anri are dating. In addition, he's also somewhat typically boyish, shown to be very excitable when he asks about Mikado's involvement in Dollars. Sure he has these odd snarky moments every now and again where he even comes off as a bit callous, but these tend to be around people he has little reason to be friendly with in the first place (such as highschool bullies!!). So all in all, he comes off as a fairly generic schoolkid.
Of course, things aren't quiiiiiite so simple. This is the series where a guy can throw vending machines around, swords can apparently reproduce, and the obsessive otaku are among the saner members of the cast. So, someone so seeminlgy flat and mundane doesn't really fit in! In truth, Aoba's childlike attitude is essentially one massive facade. In fact, he has plenty of experience as an actor, especially when it comes to using his innocent appearance to manipulate people. Seriously, he was an expert at hiding his emotions, to the point he managed to frame his brother for arson, while in elementary school. By middle school, he had a gang put together, recruiting some hardcore delinquents in the process.
In fact, his love for manipulation has led people to refer to him as a younger Izaya Orihara, which to an extent is actually fairly accurate. He analyses the people around him, takes note of any and all weaknesses, and then exploits them for his own ends. Deceiving others is pretty much second nature to him, and he sees no problem in taking advantage of the trust people put in him. He even takes some sadistic pleasure in doing so, using his childish looks to unnerve them, as he puts the blame on them for being so easily manipulated. . All in all, Aoba’s the type to use information to achieve his advantage, controlling the people around him to compensate for his lack of physical strength.
Aaand this is where the similarities with Izaya come to an end, as there’s one basic fact that sets them apart, and serves as the basis for their ‘rivalry’. Namely, the fact that Aoba hates humanity. Which can probably be attributed to his brother’s… less than stellar attitude towards him (… In fact, Ran’s treatment is pretty much entirely to blame for Aoba’s outlook on life). But even then, he’s similar to Izaya in the sense that his hatred is fairly impersonal, for humanity as a whole, rather than anyone in particular (beyond a few… interesting people here and there).
On an individual basis, Aoba simply doesn’t care about people. The idea that he should care more about a single person seems nonsensical to him, since everyone is equally deserving of being hated. This has given him a fairly unusual (better word here being 'lacking') idea of morality, since he doesn’t see any real point in differentiating between things like good and evil. More often than not, his hatred simply manifests as basic paranoia, since he feels that he has no reason to actually trust the people around him, especially after all the abuse Ran put him through.
Thus, it’s hard for one to really see this part of him unless he’s interacting with one of the aforementioned ‘interesting’ people. Aoba’s criterion here is a little vague, but it tends to come down to how much he stands to gain from a person. Mostly because, hey, why should he being anything other than self-serving. Power, of any sort, also interests him, considering it’s part of what drew him to Mikado (well, that and the fact that he seriously underestimated him). Here, he shows his more sadistic side, toying with them until he’s either sufficiently entertained, or until he has what he wants. In short, if a person has nothing to offer him, and he can’t derive any amusement from them, he couldn’t care less about them.
Of course, he has a few more basic faults. Ran’s treatment, while leading him to become a misanthropic manipulator, has also left him pretty developmentally-stunted. While Aoba may hold a great deal of confidence in his skills, he has trouble maintaining his cool when he’s in a situation where he can’t apply them. Pretty much every conversation he has with the twins is an example here, where he’s shown to still be a child to some extent, completely unable to deal with things like romance or affection. Volume Nine takes this even further, implying that Aoba has a deep-seated fear of being alone and that he is, to an extent, dependent on his own subordinates to keep himself going.
Finalllly, his favourite colour is blue and fire freaks the hell out of him. This is relevant I promise.

[ At that, he moves back, giving a fairly clear view of... a kid who seriously doesn't look any older than eight! It also looks like he's a little bashful over how he started this recording, if the blush on his cheeks is any indicator. ]
Hey! I'm not really sure how to introduce myself in this scenario so... I'm Aoba Kuronuma, Raira High Class 1-A! [ The fact this might mean absolutely nothing to the people listening doesn't even seem to occur to him. ] I'm new here, but I think I'm fairly up to date right now, and I'll be joining House Loki! [ He's actually pretty irritated at being stuck with a god that might give him away as a fake, but that just encourages him to look even more like a poor kid who's out of his depth. ]
Then... [ Aaaand his eyes scrunch up in thought for a moment. ] As a last thing, does 'Ikebukuro' mean anything to anyone here? It's where I live back home, so I'd be glad to know anyone else is from there!

Shortly after he'd awoke, Aoba became aware of two fairly important facts. One, that he was most likely nowhere near Ikebukuro (where, exactly, he couldn't be sure. after contemplating Chichibu of all places for a minute, he'd decided to put the issue aside). Two, everything hurt. Then again, said pain also helped him conclude that he wasn't dreaming. Then again, that was before he'd realised that he had wings.
Wings.
Up until then, he'd been working under the conclusion that he had somehow been kidnapped. As for what purpose, he could really only speculate. Trying to guess the means were a little easier. The two mostly likely options were that someone had managed to drug him, or that he’d been assaulted. Given the sore feeling in his back, the latter seemed to be that best assumption to go with for now. Of course, that created the question of how he’d been assaulted, but he would have to put that aside for later. Even then though, he was still left wondering who was responsible for attacking him.
He’d made a point of keeping anyone seriously dangerous from knowing his face (usually by getting Gin deal with any face-to-face meetings, considering the only thing he was good at was being intimidating), and the possibility that the Toramaru had decided to go after him was… fairly low. Though, that did leave one other possibility, which was actually supported by how needlessly elaborate this kidnapping seemed.
Thankfully, he was spared the joy of having Orihara Izaya on his mind after he'd glanced over his shoulder, paused, and confirmed that yes, the blue things sticking out of his back were, in fact, wings.
So, that left him here, leaning against a tree in the middle of nowhere, wondering whether or not to question his own sanity. Not that it took him long to decide, he could deal with wasting time on things like doubt later. First and foremost, he was going to find whoever (or whatever) left him like this. As to what he would actually do with them... could also be dealt with later. Thus, he pushed off against the tree, resisted the urge to nurse his head, and set off to find the nearest patch of civilisation.
